June 13 Meeting: Fire Safety, Evacuation Planning, and Candidate Michael Nahas

Greetings Neighbors,

It is time for our monthly neighborhood meeting, and YES, we are halfway through the year. June 13, 2026 will be our LAST meeting before the summer break.

Meeting Details

  • Saturday, June 13, 2026
  • 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM
  • East Nineteenth Street Baptist Church, 3401 Rogge Lane

This month we will hear from:

  • Fred Richardson with the National Firewise Alliance
  • Marco Martinez with the City of Austin Fire Department
  • Michael Nahas, candidate for City Council District 1

Why this meeting matters

The Pecan Springs and Springdale Hills area is listed as one of Austin’s Firezone areas. Our Secretary, Nadia Balbot, recently completed the Firewise training and brought back important information. Fires move fast. If we are not prepared, we risk losing our homes, our families, and our pets. Please read the summary below and join us at the meeting.

We have been hosting District 1 candidates over the past few months. This month, candidate Michael Nahas will share his platform.

Preventing fire from reaching your home

  • Schedule a free SIZE review to check for fire risks within 100 feet of your home. Fences, mulch, shrubs, and grass should sit at least 5 feet away from the house. Call 311 or email firewildfire@austintexas.gov to schedule.
  • Place all dead plant material in your trash or compost bin every week.

Making your evacuation plan

Who is evacuating?

  • Your household and family members
  • Your pets and their carriers

What goes in your “Go Bag” (3 to 5 days of supplies):

  • Clothes, toiletries, hygiene products
  • Medications
  • Copies of official documents: birth certificates, marriage certificates, IDs (Social Security cards, driver’s licenses), wills, vaccine records. Store copies in separate locations.

How will you evacuate?

  • By vehicle is recommended
  • If you do not have a vehicle or need medical assistance, register at stear.texas.gov so the emergency management team can support you

Who to talk to about your plan:

  • Your nearest neighbors, so you can coordinate
  • Elderly, disabled, or mobility impaired neighbors, to confirm they have a way out

Helpful websites and tools

  • warncentraltexas.org for emergency alerts by text
  • readycentraltexas.org for disaster prep info and pop-up events with free emergency supplies
  • austinwildfire.org for current wildfire risk status in Austin

When an evacuation order is issued

  • You will receive a text alert. The message will include a form to confirm you have evacuated so emergency teams know not to come looking for you.
  • Stop and speak with emergency personnel or police on the street for the latest updates.
  • Checkpoints will likely be set up at HEB on Manor Road and 183, or HEB at Mueller. The exact location depends on the size and direction of the wildfire.

This information is too important to miss. Please come, bring a neighbor, and let’s make sure our community is ready.

Thank you,
Shirley Lee-Terry
